Graduated Scotia High School Class of 1953...
She was a midget or dwarf, with serious health problems. I remember running into her at the Mohawk Avenue A&P from time to time when I was with Aunt Helen.
Undated clipping, possibly Union-Star, “LOTS OF TOYS -- Girl Scouts from troop 57 at Sunny View show some of the dolls that they repaired and clothed for distribution through the Christmas bureau of the Related Activities council. From left are Rosella Drollette, assistant leader; Carol Arnold, Gloria Smith, assistant leader; Heather Peter, Peggy Griffin and Arlene Hogan, assistant leaders. Mrs. Robert Treat jr., troop leader, is shown in the background.”
36 Gloria appears to be leaning way back in a wheelchair; the girls on each end are on crutches. Sunnyview was and is a major rehabilitation hospital for the area, offering advanced physical therapy.
Undated Union-Star clipping, picture of Gloria Smith, age indeterminable but possibly adult, among children in wheelchairs: “Youthful Patients Prepare for Mother’s Day Mother’s Day gifts in the form of potted plants and May baskets, are being prepared by patients at Sunny View Orthopedic Hospital, Rosa Rd., who attend grade-level classes there regularly. The presents will be given to the mothers during an open house at Sunny View tomorrow in observance of both Mother’s Day and Hospital Week. Some of the children are shown above as they worked on the project in the hospital auditorium.”
36Gazette clipping from Thursday, June 4, 1953: “Hasn’t Seen School in Almost 2 Years But Graduates Graduating with her class from Scotia high school this month will be a 17-year-old girl who hasn’t seen the school building for almost two years. Petite Gloria Smith has proved to be one of those individuals who can overcome almost any obstacle. She left school in September, 1951, because of a progressive spinal bone disease that was threatening to paralyze her. She underwent extensive bone surgery shortly afterward. From the time of her operation until recently gloria has been completely immobilized in Sunnyview hospital, her body encased in a cast. Today she will rejoin her family at hom on the Amsterdam road, well on the road to recovery. With the help of ths hospital teaching staff and the high school, Gloria has been able to keep her studies up. Her relation with classmates and teachers has been kept up, too. At least every week groups of students and teachers have gone to the hospital to visit the girl. A collection was taken up in the class last year, and Gloria was presented with a clock-radio. At the same time the local Culver Office Equipment Co. gave her a portable typewriter, which she taught herself to use. Miss Eleanor Fish, high school health teacher, feels that Gloria has done as much for her schoolmates as they have for her. She said that the opportunity to do things for the girl, and observe how she has pulled through her trouble, has been a good experience. Gloria -- if her doctor permits -- will go to the class picnic Friday to Kaydeross park and to graduation ceremonies June 22 at Union college.”
