“Joel was a private in Co. B of the 7th New Hampshire Volunteers when he was captured during the battle of Olustee, Florida on Feb. 20, 1864. He died from starvation, scurvy and gangrene and was buried in an unmarked grave at the prison.”

Listed in 1890 Census as having been a private in Company L of the 2nd NY Cavalry. Under remarks is “No discharge”. Not clear who supplied the information, though the post office was given as Crown Point, Essex County. The information for the 1890 special schedule was generally given by the veterans or their widows.
