Misc. Notes
“Abraham Snay who at the age of 16, had enlisted into the 16th New York Cavalry. He was one of 16 members of his company who volunteered for an unknown mission and was assigned to help in the search and capture of John Wilkes Booth and his accomplices after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865. On April 26th, the search party had cornered Booth and a David Herold in a tobacco barn on the Garrett farm near Port Royal, VA. Mr. Snay was only 10 feet from John W. Booth when a Sergeant Boston Corbett from the search party broke his orders of taking Booth alive and fired the shot that ended his life. At the time of Abraham Snay’s death on Feb. 9, 1928, it was recorded by many area newspapers that he held the distinction of being the last of the 16 members of that famous search party. It was also noted that Mr. Snay was laid to rest on Feb. 12th, which was Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.”
