Died in the Civil War.
96“Daniel Peck, son of Alvah and Dorthea (Hathaway) Peck, was born and raised in Jay, new York. At the age of 16 [actually, 15 years, 71 days] , Daniel married Almeda Alice Hall. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Joseph Babcock, a minister of the First Baptist Church of Jay. When the Civil War started, Daniel enlisted into the 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry, Company L, on November 18, 1863 in Plattsburgh, New York with his older brother Dillavan and many other relatives of the family. While serving in his unit, Daniel was in and out of the hospital with intermittent fever and chronic diarrhea. It was also recorded that he had suffered from wounds received during battle. He was transferred on December 16, 1864 from the U.S.A. Marine General Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana to the Ladies General Hospital in New York City. He was put aboard the U.S. transport ship North America with approximately 225 sick and furloughed men. While enroute it was said that the ship was fired upon by a confederate gun battery off the coast of Florida and sunk on December 22, 1864. All but 8 men were lost. Daniel drowned with many of his comrades on that day. News of this disaster finally reached home as well as his older brother Dillavan and fellow soldiers in his company. Daniel’s widow remarried on November 10, 1869 to a Charles Dickenson from New York City. The ceremony was performed by Reverend George L. Thompson at the Kips Bay Methodist Episcopal Church in new York City. Almeda applied for and received a widow’s pension from the government from 1864 until she remarried in 1869. There were no children born to Daniel and Almeda Alice (Hall) Peck.”
