Up the hill from the house stood the Coreys school. Harry Freeman’s children, Ross, Alice, and Grace, and Bob Canning’s daughter, Gertrude, were among Clarence’s classmates. Freeman and Canning were both guides on the carry. There were about eight children in the one-room school when the Pettys arrived. Their teacher snowshoed to work from the home where she boarded. There is a picture of that first class taken by Catherine with her big camera.”
