Misc. Notes
In Gram Smith’s photos there is a photograph that appears to be of Spanish-American War soldiers in the Philippines (there was a note to that affect) that identifies Carroll Hall as at center, behind the bar. The uniforms are right, and the place is ramshackle enough to be Philippine (or anywhere else, though, really). He is a half-brother of Ernest Smith.

In the 1900 census, he is living with his mother Lottie Smith. He is 23, born in NY, his father in Ireland, his mother in NY. He appears to be a “leather hand” (“leather” is quite clear).10

In the 1910 census, he is living with wife Carrie E. in the home of his father-in-law, Lewis Petteys. He is 34, on his first marriage, has been married 5 years. He is a farmer working on “general farms.” They have no children.61

In 1930, Carroll D. Hall is living on Main Street in Middle Falls, town of Greenwich. He is 52, was 27 when first married, owned his home (worth $7000 - largest value in the neighborhood), had a radio, and did not farm. He and his mother were from New York, his father from Vermont. He was an electrician in the automobile industry, and was a veteran (“Sp.” -- Spanish American). With him were wife Carrie, age 53 (28 when first married), and daughter Helen B. (12) and son Robert J. (11).5

The U.S. Army Register of Enlistments 1798-1914 (Ancestry.com) lists Carrol D. Hall as having enlisted Feb. 14, 1901 at Albany, NY by Capt. Goldman for a period of 3 years. It says he was born in Greenwich, New York, that he was 24 years and 3 months old. His occupation was “finisher,” eyes were blue, hair dark brown, complexion dark, height 5’ 8-1/2”. His regiment was the 29th Infantry, Co. F, and he was discharged Feb. 13, 1904 at “Plattsburg Bks, N.Y., by expr. serv. Pvt. Exclt.” Assuming that “Pvt.” was his rank, and “Exclt” referred to his health, as others are listed as “very good” or had a specific ailment.
If he served in 1901 and was in the Philippines (as suggested by the picture mentioned above), he would have served in the Philippine American War, 1898-1902.

His World War I draft registration card lists him as Carrol David Hall of 17 Mowry Ave. , Greenwich, NY. He is 41, was born Oct. 26, 1876. He is a mill employee at D. Whiting and Sons, Greenwich. He lists Mrs. Carrol D. Hall of the same address, and signs with a single “l”.15
