An Edwin Goodrich does indeed show up in Olean, in the 1850 census as a 6 year old living in the home of Frederick S. Martin, a 56-year-old merchant born in Vermont. His wife Cornelia, 45, was born in New York. Some relation to Gustavus? There are other unrelated people in this home, as well, whose occupations are not given.59

In 1870, Edwin and Deborah are found at the home of Cyrus and Emily Rice in Bay City, Michigan. Edwin is 27, a bookkeeper with $300 personal estate, from New York. His wife and her family are from Michigan. Cyrus is a machinist.29

In 1893, Edwin appears in “The Biographical Directory of the Railway Officials of America,”
in the following entry:
“Goodrich, Edwin, General Superintendent Lake County (Forest) Ry. Office Branch, Mich.
Born March 22, 1844 at New York, N.Y., being the son of Gustavus A. and Angeline Goodrich. He was educated at the Olean Academy. Entered railway service 1888 as general superintendent Lake Co. Ry. which position he now holds. Mr. Goodrich was married Jan. 24, 1866, at Olean, N.Y. to Mis Deborah C. Rice.”

In 1900, Edwin appears in Peninsula Township, Grand Traverse County, Michigan. He is 60 (incorrect), born May 1840 (also incorrect) and widowed. He and his parents are from New York. He is listed as head of household with no one else in it. He listed as a farmer. This could be another Edwin Goodrich, but it could just be bad census taking.10

In 1910, Edwin appears as a boarderin Chicago, on Orleans Street, in the home of Nellie Markham. He is 68, he and his parents were born in New York, and it appears that his status is listed as “M1” -- married once? His occupation is given as “collector” for “tax abstract.” 61
