Clarence E. Holden’s “Whitehall, N.Y. local history sketches” from 1918 includes the following mention of Asa Goodrich, illustrating the presence of “negroes” in Whitehall before the Civil War:
Asa Goodrich, writing in 1819, says: “I have rented my house to John Williams, a negro, who lives there with his wife Phebe and their child, a boy three or four years old.”401

There was an Asa Goodrich listed in the Peru, Massachusetts, census records for 1790 and 1800; no further information available (Ancestry).
