According to “Deeds of Daring, or, History of the Eighth N.Y. Volunteer Cavalry,” Norwich, N.Y., Chenango Telegraph Print House, 1889, an Asa L. Goodrich was commissioned as a captain in the 8th NY Vol. Cavalry on June 1, 1864, “date of rank” April 23, 1864, killed in action April 3, 1865.
810 This regiment was organized in Chenango County. He was listed as a 2nd lieutenant with date of commission of Aug. 14, 1863, date of rank of June 25, 1863, promoted to Captain, June 1, 1864. He was in Co. F at the time he was killed in Anozoiine Church, Va.
810As part of the Second Brigade under Sheridan, the 8th made a charge on breastworks at Five Forks (Virginia -- Dinwiddie/Appomattox) on 4/1, were repulsed twice before succeeding, and suffered severely. by April 3, Petersburg and Richmond were held by the Union Army.
