Margaret A. Cath
Scotia -- Margaret A. Cath, 94, of Mohawk Ave., died Monday, February 11, 2002 at the Baptist Health Center, Scotia following a short illness.

Born on October 10, 1907 in West Glenville, she was the daughter of Teunis and Nillie Seaman Cath. She was a life long area resident of Scotia.

Miss Cath was a sales person at the former Wallace Co. in Schenectady for over 30 years.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Helen Cath, Hazel Smith and Marion Carrano.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Ave. (Route 50), Scotia. A calling hour will be held Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Burial will be at Park Cemetery, Scotia.

Contributions may be made to the Baptist Health Center.

May 20 - The pupils of the village school gave an entertainment in Odd Fellows hall Friday evening, May 10th. The following program was rendered: Selection, Glenville orchestra; play, “Uncle Sam’s Children,” school; selection, orchestra; duet, “Gathering Wild Flowers,” Theresa Swart and George Bull; lecture, “War Conditions,” Dr. P.J. Hirst; quartet selection, Messrs. Van Vranken and Wells, Mrs. Lucy Van Vranken and Mrs. Ruth DeGraff; naval reserves, boys of school; selection, orchestra; chorus and tableaux, Uncle Sam, George Dawson; Columbia, Nellie Kindar; Liberty, Myra Hallenbeck; Uncle Sam’s children, school; selection, orchestra. The play, entitled “Uncle Sam’s Children,” was unusually attractive and showed [sic] setting was a patriotic one. The character of Uncle Sam, by George Dawson, was especially worthy of mention. The duet by Theresa Swart and George Bull was a pleasing number. [Further descriptions of the program] . . . Following this was a recitation entitled, “The Service Flag,: by Margaret Cath, which was so well given that it touched the hearts of many in the audience. Ice cream was served at the close of the entertainment. The proceeds were about $25, with which a Junior Red Cross league will be formed in the school. At the request of the Glenville Red Cross auxiliary, the play will be repeated Friday evening, May 24, at Odd Fellows’ hall. The proceeds will be used toward the Glenville quote of the Red Cross drive.

15 County School Representatives Will Meet City Pupils Next
The preliminary spelling bee was held in the main court room of the county building Saturday to determine the best 15 spellers in the county schools who will meet 15 representatives of the city schools Saturday. The speller winning Saturday’s contest will go to the state fair at Sryacuse, September 12-17 as representative of this county.
The judges at Saturday’s contest were Miss Lillian B. Turnbull, principal of the Franklin school; B.H. Boorn, principal of the Seward school; and R.D. Zimmer, principal of the Clinton school.
The winners of the contest were: Margaret Cath, Glenville, 16; John Sedaker, Glenville, one [sic]; Helen Rochford, Mohawk School, Scotia; Muriel Van Buren, Scotia; Frank Scheels, Carman; Dora Palmer, Rotterdam, three; Irma Mcdonald, Bigsbee; Arlene Wagoner, Scotia; Edith Crandall, Scotia; Lilly Lundstrom, Scotia; Mabel Bowen, Draper; Charlotte Dantz, Rectors; Anna Kuon, Van Antwerp; Lucille Brooks, Alplaus; Mardel Simpson, Scotia.
[note -- age of 16 doesn’t comport with her birth year of 1907 -- would make it 1905, or that she was 18].

Miss Mary Kemper, daughter of Mrs. Mary Kemper of 127 Sanders avenue, and Arthur Tryon were married at St. Andrew’s church Saturday night at 8 o’clock by Rev. Fred Swindlehurst. The attendants were Miss Margaret Cath and Christopher Leason. The bride wore white silk and carried white roses. The bridesmaid wore pink voile and carried pink roses.
The guests were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Demger, Mr. and Mrs. William Shopman and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Kilgallen and family, Mr. and Mrs. E. Smith and daughter, Mrs. E. Woodlawn, Mrs. W. [again that would put her at 18 if 1907 is correct, or these could refer to another Margaret Cath.]
